Seems like you've found the best way. Give directly to the needy. And, as mph warns, don't let the gov't do it for you. Let toe gov't do it for you, and your poor fellow might not even have gotten the fifty cents that he was looking for.

Freedom does have its responsibilities. Yet, the Fourth of July celebrations remind us of what it means to be free.

Happy Fourth everyone, even if it is a bit after midnight.

Mark, thanks for sharing this story. It's a reminder that some people really are in need, that some people really do give, that there is hope for all of us.

Hope your weekend is a very happy one!

:-)

that's a good story, mark, and very positive.

Since I work in downtown L.A., I am accosted
daily by people asking for money.

At this point I am sorry to say that I am
unconvinced about the needs of most of these panhandlers.

I have bought food for some when asked for money
to get lunch, as I was on my way to pick up a bite, though.

If I had given money every time I was asked over the past
decade, I'd have to claim these folks as dependents on
my income taxes.....

Today there was a movie crew(again)
outside my office building.

It was rather interesting to see these
crew types (they are readily identifiable
by their uniform, i.e., work boots, shorts,
tee-shirts, baseball caps, thick belts with
stuff hanging off, sunglasses) intermingling
with the panhandlers on the street.

Never a dull moment in downtown L.A.....<g>
