John, the problem with Nostredamus is that you are free to interpret, for instance, I translate the second line to:

Saturne d'or en fer se changera into "Saturne d'or enfer se changera" which may transliterate into "gods of gold to hell will change", instead of "gods of gold, you can use the golden calf which in his days was more of symbol of hedons. Of course I have assumed that "en fer" (into iron) was meant to be "enfer" (hell).

Now as for potential transmutation of gold into iron, it will have to be through a fission route if you start from gold, however, fission products are not "singular", namely absorption of a bunch of particles could bring it to a very "unstable fissionable" state, but the daughter products are many and varied. But, most likely, absorption of a thermal neutron by Au 197 (that has quite a good cross section for neutron absorption), will result in beta decays of the resulting Au198 to Hg198 (mercury). You'll have to split Au isotopes "three ways" at least to get a lot of Fe.
