The problems for 3Com is that they are squeezed on the low end by Intel's networking division which is competing against them on price, and on the high end by Cisco's dominance, financial flexibility and single-vendor strategy.

There are specific cable modem and DSL vendor plays that aren't suffocating under these competitive pressures.

>> I use a Motorola cable modem -- does it have 3COM parts inside? Also, I have been thinking I need a palm pilot -- so, hmmmm, maybe I should buy the stock also! The knock on 3COM is that they are spread too thin -- do you agree?

I think 3COM modems say 3COM on the cover. The only case I make for COMS is earnings and valuation. Earnings are in a nice trend upward: 0.97, 1.07, 1.22 (current FY). There are buyout rumors. And in a growing technology area.

As far as spread too thin, all their products are in comm area. Even palm pilot will be seen as an I/O device for wireless data.
