You CANNOT compare the Internet to a book. You cannot compare the Internet to paper media!

Oh, but one can compare the two and learn from paper media. The test page you linked looks cluttered and drab for reasons that paper media designers have dealt with for decades. The SI designers seem to understand the principles, which is probably why they came up with a design that does a better job of highlighting the message.

The dark areas above and below the message in the SI beta design create a negative space. SI leaves that space uncluttered. Within the space, there is only the message and the widgets that let one move to other messages. In your alternative, the gray slabs above and below the message have the same value as the message itself. The message area is cluttered with a redundant vertical border. There's already a clean vertical border on each message created by the browser window. The extra border only leads the eye away from the message to the gray slabs.
