>The mere fact that we cannot come up with a good example of a possible highly successful "destination" site means maybe the portal concept is not that far off. <

Eric,
I don't think it's that far off at all...
You said you hardly ever go to Yahoo anymore. I've been on the net since it was called Arpanet and No ONE knew what the hell the I-net even was. When portal's were becoming popular I went and looked and thought to myself "what's all the stink about?" I went and had another look at Yahoo and Excite a little while back and was surprised to see how much they've changed. They NOW have some usefullness to me and I find I'm using them more and more for a "quick" scan of what's hapening and as a gateway to other destinations. IMHO, once Excite's VoiceChat becomes more known it'll be extremly popular and I'm sure they will get around to adding video and file transfer to it. The email accounts are terrific as throw-away spam filters instead of using my real email and I've already found the Voicemail and Fax VERY useful. The planners, reminders and communities are great as well.

I think a lot of people just need to understand how much there is at the portals, understand how to utilize what's there and how much it can help them.
