Battery life in most any digital camera is reduced considerably if the LCD display is kept on all the time. Other purely photographic functions, such as autofocus and exposure metering, consume much less power than the LCD display.

Limtex,

I think my next digicam will have a zoom, which the Coolpix 700 is missing. The 1600 x 1200 CCD is a big selling point for this camera.

Also, NiMH batteries are the only way to go. Also, I would try getting a larger CF card and turning off the LCD screen if battery consumption is an issue. A 48 MB SanDisk card costs less than $100.00 now and you can probably get 50 pictures or so in a reasonably high resolution on a card that size. If you are into uncompressed .tiff files I would leave the LCD on and edit as you go.
