It is true that Guardsmen can be called to active duty in a war, but this was rare during Vietnam--that's why so many tried to join the Guard during that era. What's ironic here is that Al Gore did join the army, and was sent to Vietnam, although I believe I read that he was given a job wayyyy behind the lines. Something about being a Senator's son figured into that is my guess.

I am really getting nostalgic for Bob Dole just about now.

Absolutely. JLA
