I didn't join during peacetime, and I don't fault anyone who doesn't join up now. My best school friend joined the army, and I wouldn't vote for him for dog catcher either! What's bothering me is how many of our would-be leaders wound up in these coveted Guard slots--we all have to agree it's disproportionate. If these men knew special privileges were given them because of who their fathers were, this shows a lack of character. There are men who risked their lives despite wealth and privilege--I've named some--John Kennedy, George Bush, and I'll have to even say Al Gore (I guess his unit in Vietnam had a fair chance of seeing combat duty). Indeed, it's pretty unsettling to me as a Republican that there are pictures of Al Gore in uniform in Vietnam, but no candidate on the Republican side other than McCain can produce the same.

In your comment to chalu2: But a war time record does not make you a good leader necessarily, so you should not make that the only factor when voting for someone.

I believe the point was not having a war time record or not - the point was willingness to go or getting/using special influence to get out of going.
