Thanks to kasmarski from the RagingBull board.... Some perspective on MSFT/SCKT vs. PalmVII: I found article below at site called CEWire. Microsoft offers interim wireless CE option By Anne Knowles, PC Week Online June 28, 1999 9:00 AM ET Microsoft Corp. responded to 3Com Corp.'s wireless Palm VII last week with wireless solutions for Windows CE devices. The company announced last week at PC Expo here that users of Windows CE Palm-size PCs will be able to work wirelessly using an infrared-equipped cellular phone as a modem; it also announced a forthcoming wireless kit that works with cell phones and includes a Socket Digital Phone Card from Socket Communications Inc. The first wireless solution--using a cell phone that has an infrared port for a modem--is not a viable option in the United States, where such cell phones are not popular, conceded Phil Holden, group product manager in the Windows CE product group, in Redmond, Wash. The majority of cell phones in Europe, however, do offer infrared ports. The latter solution will be delivered this fall as a wireless connection kit. The kit will comprise the Socket Digital Phone Card, which fits into the Palm-size PC's CompactFlash slot; Microsoft's ActiveSync 3.0 synchronization software; and an AvantGo Inc. Web client for access to www.avantgo.com, a site for Internet content that is designed to be viewed on small-device screens. Microsoft expects the kit to be available from carriers for about $100. The kit is currently being tested by several cellular carriers, according Holden. He declined, however, to specify which carriers. Microsoft is also currently writing device drivers for radio modules, which would enable Windows CE hardware manufacturers to produce wireless CE devices that incorporate radio modules like the Palm VII's, Holden said. Any and all news that is positive, I think, should be added to keep this positive flow moving on this thread. The momentum for 'hand-helds' which is surely increasing in popularity, will be fulblown by the fall and then SCKT will pop even to higher levels, than last surge.... Sorry if this is a duplicate post.
