John - Satellite connection to the internet would be a big plus up here. I'm using AOL from my summer house in Maine. The nearest login numbers are 50 miles away, so I pay 15 cents per minute for my connect time. Overall result: $300 per month gets me about one hour per day of connect time, at 25000 bits per second.

Vendit,

The last known means of high speed Internet access is satellite...

What I don't understand is how satellite can provide high bandwidth to very large numbers of users. Unless a very large satellite with many, many independent footprints is used there will surely not be enough bandwidth to go around. Even then, wouldn't the uplink bandwidth to the satellite be a problem?

Also, if a conventional modem is needed for uploading data where is the cost saving for interactive use? My experience with 64kbit/s connection is that slow sites and network congestion are the main problems, not connection speed at my end.

A really good use for a satellite connection would be a continuous feed from, for example, quote.com, where many users want the same data simultaneously.
