for starters bearcub when was the last time any person who bought an audio piece of equipment was thinking radio? gee, only you?

audio components that use dates: VCR, SAT devices, TV, WEB TV devices, cable boxes - anyway, audio is compliant.

trivial solar power

As long as we're talking about powering radios, I wish to tell you the fun that I have with my solar powered Ni-Cad charger.

More than half of the portable stuff we have today seems to run off of AA batteries. I have a AA charger that I use for a short wave radio. Works great. A sunny afternoon charges them up pretty good. Cloudy days take much longer. This is very useful for camping where there is no electrical mains available. Seems a good thing for kids to teach them a bit about science, conservation, saving money and self-reliance. (It's the Ni-Cads that save the money. It takes along time to pay off the charger when mains electricity is so much cheaper)

You can buy a BayGen radio that has a built-in crank generator, but that seems a bit pricey to me. A solar charger is more general in that it can power lots of other stuff.

I have to get another solar charger that handles C and D flashlight batteries. It should prove useful if blackouts are more frequent and longer than the 'experts' predict come January. Even if nothing bad happens in 6 months, it's still a worthwhile gizmo to have.
