[Japan KDD, Lucent to develop low-cost undersea fiber system]

NEW YORK, July 5 (Reuters) - Japan's KDD Submarine Cable Systems Inc. will team up with U.S. communication equipment giant, Lucent Technologies Inc. to develop a simple, low-cost undersea fiber optics system, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) reported.

Nikkei's Tuesday edition, citing company sources, said the two firms plan to complete a test system by next summer and will share the 10 billion yen ($83.3 million) development costs equally.

The wholly owned subsidiary of Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co. Ltd. (TOKYO:9431) (KDD) and the U.S. company will develop a seamless fiber optics system connecting cables on the ground with those under the sea, Nikkei reported.

Rather than using separate routing points, the signal-routing function will be incorporated into a ground base station, Nikkei said.

According to Nikkei, the system, which will be able to transmit information at a rate of 1 terabit per second through a router, is expected to halve laying costs and the companies will develop test equipment and test-lay a 10,000km-long fiber optic cable - a distance equal to that between Japan and the U.S. - in the Japanese partner's research center.

The system is expected to be commercialized around 2002, Nikkei reported as the sources added.

Parent firm KDD, Japan's top international phone company, has been developing undersea cable equipment with Japanese manufacturers such as NEC Corp. (TOKYO:6701) and Mitsubishi Electric Corp (TOKYO:6503).
