After spending some good fraction of my life in the capacity of providing services (including running Manhattan's Special Services Transmission Repair Desk for a number of years), it shouldn't be odd or difficult to understand that I had a momentary reflex to almost start defending the SPs in reply to your last post. But I wont. But it was a great reminder to me that certain embedded engrams never go away. Rather, they merely get beaten into forms of latent submission after sometimes very painful periods of enlightenment, which generally leads to a form of renouncement, followed by several deeds in the way of saying penance. And no, I wont get into my Catholic School upbringing, as I don't think we have enough time. By the way, are my sixty minutes up? -------- My message (to which you responded) was aimed at giving some background as to the factors which are responsible for placing the current HFCs where they are today, but I wasn't by any means justifying them. On the contrary. I was just attempting to explain their current situation, or more appropriately, their enigma. And I find your discomfort and annoyance with the artificial yoke that has been placed, likewise, to be overly arbitrary, as I think that it was probably invoked for its simplicity, rather than due to any stroke of ingenuity. I agree that a more enlightened approach of metering abuse could have been employed. Are the MSOs currently equipped in their Head Ends (the routers and policy management software) to do such metering at this time? If not, what is the burden they face in order to come up to speed in order to be able to do this? QoS is out for the time being, I'm told. It would be too drastic a step probably before they are ready to introduce tiered services at tiered pricing levels. It's too soon for that, for it would scare off a number of would-be users if they thought that they'd have to pay extra for what has been promised to them all along for much less. I would think that the kind of provisioning you suggested doesn't go beyond some mere level of willing it to be done to support the necessary policy management software, but then again, I'm not versed in MSO router policy management issues. Dan? Anyone? Regards, Frank Coluccio
