OT Growing up in Seattle, Mt. Rainier was always 'The Mountain,' as if there were no other worth mentioning. And if you've ever witnessed it presiding regally over 'The City,' Lake Washington, or Puget Sound, you'd have to agree.

However, there was one particular day in 1980 when another vied for attention. My father was sitting on the deck, experiencing the incredible vista encompassing the Cascades, Seattle skyline, the Sound, Bainbridge island, and the Olympics. (Yes, views like that actually exist.) Suddenly he saw a puff of smoke in the far distance. Hours later he learned it was the Mt. St. Helens eruption 100+ miles to the south, a peak otherwise indiscernable from that spot.

So many mountains, so little....
