If you want the system to "move faster" you should upgrade your system to at least a total of 32MB of ram. That will give the most bang for the buck.

16MB of ram just won't cut it.

If you decide to buy a new PC, get 128MB of ram.

Slow system ...

Try this: Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and check what's running on your system now. If I do this just after booting up, I get about a half dozen entries. Another thing to look at: Click Start | Programs | StartUp and see what gets started when you system gets going.

I don't know if your system's slow or if it's just loaded down with too much work.

Right click My Computer, Properties, and select the performance tab. It should say 'Configured for maximum performance' or something like it. Near the bottom, you'll see three buttons: Virtual memory, File system and Graphics. Systematically click each and select stuff which 'sounds good', such as 'Full Optimization' and 'Largest cache', but don't forget to record original settings just in case. Don't be afraid to try a different 'typical role' setting.

Right click My Computer, Properties, and select device tab. Find, select, and Right click your hard drive. Select Properties, then the settings tab. Put a check in the DMA box.

This takes care of the simple stuff. Next stop is the System Monitor. This delightful utility will enable you to see what's going on 'under the hood' to make your system slow. That is, if you don't go nuts first.

Cheerios, PW.

hi kathryn,

in addition to the good advice ck and pw gave you, remember to run defrag. let's just say that for two years, you hadn't even done that once. that would really spread pieces of files all over the place and cause your system to bog down when trying to run programs and load pages.

there's lots a person can do to maintain a computer.

:)

In addition to the defrag Mark mentioned, hopefully a scandisk is run periodically.
