Re: MSFT and SUNW

I agree with you in the sense that while I would not hesitate to put MSFT into an IRA and forget about it I would have reservations about doing the same with SUNW, but that does not mean that one can say with any precision when SUNW's "sunset" may begin. As I said, any stock can be profitably shorted as a tactical move if one is good/lucky, but efforts to call an absolute top in any stock are exceedingly difficult. I just see far too much wasted energy in both the SUNW and MSFT threads in trying to put down the other company/stock. Both have delivered superior performance over many years and I expect both will continue do to so for some time to come.

Good luck in your trade.

I agree, a SUNW takeover is not likely based on future growth concerns with increasing iron competition and reduced iron margins. Per Bill's likely candidates, the last thing INTC and IBM need is to digest something the size of SUNW; little gain and lot's of pain. If IBM wants Solaris for their RISC boxes they can setup an agreement with Sun and port it; not buy the entire company. If they want JavaSoft they could more easily buyout that division or buy-in and become a partner. INTC I don't see any benefit and the DOJ would probably block it anyways (taking over another chip company).

For MSFT I can see an agressive DOJ doing a 2-way split - separate apps from OS companies. This would no doubt would cause Bill to take some pepto but in the long run it would appease the lynch mob without adversely affecting shareholder value. I still don't think there is justification for this but no doubt the DOJ will do something. Even with the DOJ cloud, long term MSFT is a great bet, IMHO ... think if you owned AT&T before the split ;)

Cheers
James
