A lot of the current generation of politicians sleazed out of combat duty.

I'm uncomfortable with the choice of "sleazed" to describe it ... but a LOT of the same generation did what they could to not go. Some went to college as that, at one time, provided deferment, some fled to Canada, some (the rare few) were given conscientious objector status, some got into the National Guard and so on. Not saying it's "right" but given the nature of the fighting there and the lack of our country's full support, it should be no surprise many didn't want to go and I don't see any shame in that.

Because someone is now a politician is no reason, IMHO, to judge what they did back then any more harshly than what anyone else did then. My personal qualm comes for those who got special consideration when others didn't.

[Ouch! I think I feel the heat of the flames already. <G>]
