OT <You were only 100 mi away from Mt. Saint Helens? Wow that seems pretty close to
me. I saw fireworks that were 100mi away last night and they were distant but definitely
there. >

What?? You saw fireworks 100 mi away?? Can you explain??

<Plus the air must have been terrible for the wildlife etc... what an experience
though.>

If you ever visit Mt. St. Helens National Monument, you will witness first hand how truly devastating the eruption was to anything living - for miles and miles around it remained a moonscape for at least a decade (which actually is not too long).

Four inches of volcanic ash rained on Yakima, WA over 24 hours, and even Portland, OR received a dusting.

The Johnston Ridge Visitor's Center, on the rim of the volcano, features a ride-like simulation of the eruption. The Coldwater Lake Visitor's Center in the Monument is also worth visiting. As a matter of fact, a neighbor of mine designed both complexes.
