The suburban soccer mom is real, but the term as used in political debate is about suburban women who vote for Democrats, especially Clinton. I remember listening to Rush Limbaugh bombast (is that a verb? it should be) about "soccer moms" before the last presidential election. I think women vote for Democrats because almost everyone these days think it's the purpose of the federal government to solve social problems, and if you believe that social problems should be solved at the state or local level, or by private methods, that just doesn't register. So Republicans come across as uncaring "meanies."
