Because Greenspan supposedly looks to those government figures when he's deciding whether or not to raise interest rates to keep inflation under control. But the ultimate truth is there is no government statistic that will EVER signal that there is rampant asset inflation. None. Nada. AOL and Yahoo could go to 50 trillion dollars each in market cap tomorrow, and there is not a single government figure red flag that would pop up. You'd think after 1929 that they would come up with some sort of statistic to keep tabs on the market. Guess history will repeat itself.
