letter from the CEO What's New Executive Officers Investor Relations Press Releases Business Partners Careers at Metricom Right of Way Letter from the President and CEO Previous Letters: May 20,1999 April 16, 1999 March 12, 1999 February 1, 1999 December 23, 1998 June 30, 1999 To Metricom Stakeholders: Excitement and a lot of fireworks. I'm not talking about the upcoming 4th of July celebrations, but the enthusiasm at Metricom as we announced our new partnership with MCI WorldCom and increased endorsement from Vulcan Ventures resulting in $600 million to deliver on our promise of nationwide 128 kbps mobile data service. If you'd like to review the announcement, please visit our news section. Of course, we didn't take too much time to celebrate as there is pressing work at hand. In June, we finished the alpha phase of testing and invited 250 customers to put the 128 kbps service through its paces in a beta test. Already during the Beta testing, we have seen many positive comments and have devoted part of our web site for chronicling the 128 kbps progress. We expect to exit this testing at just about the time we wrap up ROW activity granting us permission to hang equipment in our first 12 markets. We expect to begin physical deployment later in the year, test these parts of the network, and go live by the middle of next year. Once that is complete, we start the second wave, then the third until we have 46 markets covered by mid-2001. As the service become available, it will be sold through MCI WorldCom and other distribution partners. In this way, we can concentrate our efforts on our core strength - designing and operating digital networks for mobile users. Our partners gain a valuable new component to their portfolio, allowing users to have fully functional wireless access to corporate and personal information from anywhere they need to be. We are "full speed ahead" at Metricom and encourage you to check back often to monitor our progress. We also want to take a moment to thank you for your faith and support as we push forward with our vision of a nationwide high-speed service that will revolutionize mobile data services.
