Consolidated Edison Inc., owner of New York's largest
utility, reported record power consumption by its 3 million
customers. Public Service Enterprise Group Inc., which has 2.2
million customers in New Jersey, and GPU Inc., which has 2
million customers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, also reported
unprecedented electricity demand.
''Most of the utilities are really scrambling for power'' in
the New York area, said Kevin Fox, general manager of power
trading for Aquila Energy Corp., a Kansas City, Missouri-company
that is one of the nation's biggest power traders. ''We're
breaking all kinds of records.''

About 55,000 of GPU's customers are without electricity
because of heat-related power failures. The Morristown, New
Jersey-based company also said it was instituting ''rolling
blackouts,'' temporary interruptions of service rotated from one
group of customers to another that are designed to avoid
equipment overloads.
