The Berst was the Best.

While we threaders seek the excellence that the new last mile technologies can bring into our lives, the really smart guys like Mr. Case simply 'rule' by learning the lessons of the past. Two in particular come to mind right now. P.T. Barnum, "A sucker's born every minute." And H.L. Menchen, "No one ever lost a dime underestimating the taste of the American public."

Alas, while Mr. Case gets the $Billions, I get a headache. But then someone else said life is not fair. And how....

Thanks for the post, do you suppose Ziff-Davis has burned its bridges with the advertisers at AOL?

As an aside, I felt a little uncomfortable at first, posting the upstream comments about them being an OMRO or online marketing research operator, but it is only a natural outgrowth of any online service provider's role. They all (or most of those who cater in this fashion) act as fulfillment agents for online e-commerce transactions for the principals and advertisers they serve, through the use of their ordering, billing and fulfillment systems. What databases these ORMOs must possess.

Recently, my daughter, while corresponding with a web mall via her boss's e-mail system (although, her own e-mail account ID on that system) had some return e-mail pop up on her home account via the ORMO. In other words, it was sent to her personal e-mail by that same mall to her OMRO ISP account (use your imagination as to which one I'm referring to here) at home.

She never gave them that ORMO ISP's e-mail information, however. I'm looking into this one and shall post if I'm ever able to unravel it. Curious, wouldn't you say? Could it be that someone's relational database (the mall's) ran away with itself, and pointed to the wrong stored return address? Privacy. Don't bet on it.
