Protect Data to Use Certicom Encryption Technology in Protect!
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1999--Protect Data Security Inc., and Certicom, a leading provider of next-generation encryption technology, today announced a license agreement to integrate Certicom's industry standard elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) technology into Protect!, its flagship enterprise PC security software product.

This development will enable digitally signed software updates to Protect! users, which adds a critical layer of security to the end-user's PC file system and eliminates the risk of malicious code transmission.

Protect! offers enterprise customers file encryption and operating system security. Certicom's digital signature technology is used to verify the integrity of all Protect! automatic software updates, therefore shielding end-users from one of the most common risks on the Internet today, unauthorized and harmful code.

''One major issue with all distributed security systems is the risk of Trojan horses that implement bogus changes to system settings or user profiles. Certicom technology assures that only authorized software updates will be accepted,'' said John Muir, president of Protect Data Security Inc.

''Putting the Certicom encryption logo on Protect! reflects our commitment to utilize the most advanced and trusted technologies to secure data on PCs.''

''Certicom's digital signature technology offers Protect! users additional trust and assurance that their PCs are secure,'' said Rick Dalmazzi, president of Certicom. ''Our relationship with Protect Data illustrates the flexibility of ECC technology for a wide variety of distributed systems.''

Protect!, version 3.0, transparently encrypts the hard drive of any desktop or notebook so that PC end users have no need to learn encryption or decryption procedures. Data encryption keys are not stored on the computer but are generated by a stringent authentication process based on fixed or dynamic passwords.

Encryption occurs immediately and automatically without affecting performance or requiring user intervention. Protect! further assures privacy with an integrated keyboard lock and screensaver that activate automatically and require secure authentication to resume work.

Distributed management tools allow system administrators to deploy Protect! from a server to the entire network and to administer the system without having to visit each individual machine. An administrator defines the organization's security policy in a Master Profile distributed across the network to individual PCs. Protect! operates with Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT.
