Inauguration of the first photonic chip manufacturing plant - Lumenon inaugurates first
photonic chip manufacturing plant

DORVAL, July 6 /CNW/ - Dr. Iraj Najafi, President and Chief Executive
Officer of Lumenon Innovative Lightwave Technology Inc., and Dr Mark Andrews,
Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer, inaugurated the first photonic
chip manufacturing plant today. The innovative photonic chip technology
developed by Lumenon offers cost-effective solutions to boost fiber optic
telecommunications and data communications transmission capacity
substantially.
''We will produce chips based on our breakthrough technology. Our product
will be highly competitive since it is mass produced - just like
microelectronic chips. Relatively low production costs and revolutionary
design will enable us to respond to a wide range of needs,'' explained Dr.
Najafi. Made of compact hybrid glass integrated circuits on silicon, Lumenon's
chips combine the best features of glass and organic polymeric materials
(plastic) producing a unique material. The chips are designed to be integrated
with fiber optic networks and equipment. Low production costs and a flexible
production process make the chip easily adaptable for a wide range of
telecommunications and data communications applications.
''Our highly adaptable photonic chips, combined with the plastic optical
fiber we are developing, serve as a platform technology increasing the speed
of access to large quantities of data, images and multimedia products and
allowing businesses and individuals to get the full benefit of the internet
and information technologies,'' added Dr. Mark Andrews, Vice President and
Chief Technology Officer.
Lumenon was founded in 1998 by Dr. Iraj Najafi, Ph.D. Physics, Associate
Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique and Dr. Mark P. Andrews, Ph.D. Chemistry,
Associate Professor at McGill University. The creation of the company
culminates over 30 years of independent research and six years of
collaborative R&D by these two respected scientists.
Lumenon develops and manufactures high-performance integrated optics
components and plastic optical fiber for telecommunication, data
communication, computer network and sensor applications. Lumenon is listed
under the NASDAQ symbol LUMM (OTC BB).

Vertel and Lucent Technologies Announce Strategic Alliance for
Network and Operations Support System Software

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. and MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 7, 1999--

Outsourcing Contract for Vertel's Mediation Software To Enhance

Lucent's Multi-Vendor Interoperability

Vertel® (Nasdaq:VRTL - news), a leading global provider of multi-management solutions for telecommunications networks, and Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - news) today announced a strategic alliance to create new multivendor network integration software for Lucent's operations support systems (OSS) applications. The strategic agreement includes an initial contract for Vertel to develop network management protocol conversion and mediation software. Based on the companies' projections, the agreement has the potential to grow to $20 million over three years.

''Lucent and Vertel's combined expertise strengthens our ability for delivering multivendor, multiprotocol management solutions to our customers,'' said Deepak Kanwar, director, Lucent Communications Software Group. ''Vertel's experience with CORBA, Q3, SNMP, and proprietary management interfaces will enhance Lucent's management and operations software support for today's diverse networks.''

''This alliance bolsters our strategy for adding value to our network equipment manufacturer customers and our third-party applications suppliers,'' said Bruce Brown, president and chief executive officer of Vertel. ''By providing network protocol conversion and mediation software, Vertel can help Lucent continue to focus its resources on delivering leading operations support systems applications.''

Vertel's mediation solutions framework is built on Telecore2, the next generation of Vertel's TMNTelecore product, one of the industry's most widely deployed TMN standards-based management platforms. The framework provides standards-based and proprietary interfaces to multi-vendor OSSs and network equipment, integrates a carrier-grade CORBA distribution platform, and is designed to maximize reusability and expedite deployment. The framework also leverages key Vertel technologies, such as the OpenStore persistence storage module and world-class simulation tools.

Lucent Technologies' portfolio of Service Ready(TM) Network Fault Management (NFM) software offers comprehensive surveillance and control capabilities at the network and element management layers -- a fast and effective means to help detect, diagnose, isolate and resolve multivendor network problems. The NFM system is modular and scalable, and designed to support existing and emerging industry standards such as TMN.

Lucent anticipates deploying the first set of solutions developed with Vertel by the end of 1999.
