NOVELL: Hospital network in good health with NetWare 5

JUL 6, 1999, M2 Communications - Novell UK -- Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospitals, an IT flagship for the NHS, has chosen NetWare 5, Novell's network platform for Internet enabled business, to underpin its web developments. The Pinderfields and Pontefract intranet is accessed by 1000 hospital users to exchange vital information with other health authorities and connect to NHSNet, an extranet covering the national network of all health organisations and GPs.

Peter Kidd, head of IT at Pinderfields and Pontefract, is responsible for the project which is expected to take 5 months from now to roll out: "We chose NetWare 5 because it is the ideal platform for the deployment and use of web technology. Our goal is to set up a pure IP environment, and NetWare 5 is helping us to achieve this. In the long run it will help to extend the life of all products within the network."

The services that are accessed by users via the web include email, organisational information, and the patient administration system. The details obtainable from this database are highly confidential so high level security is vital. NetWare 5 offers a host of security services including public-key cryptography and Secure Authentication Services (SAS). These features, all integrated with NDS, will simplify administration, offer new levels of access control, and integrate Internet security technology for higher levels of data integrity and privacy across public networks.

Kidd explains why he chose NetWare over NT: "NT is an answer to a question that we have never asked, it doesn't appear to be helpful to our needs at all. We believe that NT lacks the robustness and reliability that our organisation needs. I understand NetWare's strategy; the way it fits into all Novell's products and the Internet is coherent and clear. This does not seem to be the case with NT."

The Hospital is currently installing a suite of Novell network management solutions including, ZENworks, BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3 and GroupWise 5.5. The IT department carried out formal evaluation tests on the main groupware packages; Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise. The decision to choose GroupWise was based on functionality, strategy and low cost of ownership.

NDS, Novell's Internet directory at the core of NetWare 5, is central to the IT strategy, allowing the department to organise and secure Internet and intranet resources with a single point of administration, and provides the tools needed for easy, fast application development.

Kidd comments: "Users will notice a change in terms of improved network performance; the system will run faster and delivery of services will be more efficient. However, if users are aware of the network and how we are delivering applications then we've got it wrong. It should be completely transparent to the user. This is the goal that NDS helps us to deliver."

NetWare 5 means that the IT department can do more within the existing resources. It delivers at over 60 per cent lower network operation costs, by enhancing network and desktop management, optimising bandwidth, consolidating protocols and operating systems, and running distributed applications.

Kidd plans to employ the assistance of a Novell Service Provider to complete the project.

About Pinderfields and Pontefract NHS Trust Pinderfields and Pontefract NHS Trust, at Wakefield, West Yorkshire Hospital have a regional speciality in burns and plastic surgery and employ over 5,000 staff with beds for in excess of 1100 patients at multiple locations.

NOVL today

Finally some profit taking set in. This ought to clear out the day traders and the momentum players from last week.

Acampora's recommendation means the institutions have been accumulating this stock and he is giving them a pat on the back.

"Be aggressive" ---look at the August 30 calls --- 2355 contracts traded today at 1 to 1 7/16ths, almost half the open interest, and 785 July 25's traded at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2.

Lots of bets being place that NOVL will consolidate and then break through its old highs.
