Regardless of their intentions, the net results are favorable.
Asia is healthier since the crises, when the world was first exposed to the gross mismanagement of emerging market economies. While the U.S. model may not be perfect, I challenge you to find a better one. There are several countries that have adopted the U.S. model and are now thriving - but it takes time & commitment. If Indonesia fails to adopt a proper capitalist model in favor of the crony-capitalist model that has proliferated in Russia over the last 10 years, then their fate will be one more unsavory than anything Soeharto could've ever propagated.

I seriously doubt that Soros give a hoot as to what consequences his action has on the people of Indonesia or Thailand.

Actually, I think that Soros is probably one of the few who not only has a complete understanding of the consequences of his actions, but also cares more about what is happening to people than making money. I think he thinks he's already made more than enough.

However that also means that he is acutely aware of his limitations, and what will or won't happen anyway regardless of whether he participates (be that participation in a speculative "attack", or a philanthropic venture).

Edit: Paul, you mentioned that Soros had mental problems. What was it that you had in mind here? (I had not heard this before)
