Thank you for posting the SDMI story link.

Again, the initial SDMI spec concentrates on the DEVICES being the decoder, and TI's DSP-based solutions for detecting secrurity watermarks in the music file.

techweb.com

...Asked what the spec means to OEMs, Lacy called it a set of requirements for SDMI-compliance. While it does not specify silicon or algorithms to be used, he said it does describe functions and interfaces for player devices and devices with PC-like functionality or a host; SDMI-compliant applications that talk to the host; and moving content in various formats in a secure manner and in a way that does not create artifacts or violate copyright protection.

----

Again, the preliminary indications are that it is the devices themselves, not the media that the music files are dedicated to. The wording above stresses the fact that the music files are to be moveable. This indicates the possibility that music files can be stored unplayable in a vast library on your 20 Gig hard drive (enough for 5000 songs), and easily transferred with a mouse click to your MP3 player in any order you see fit. - A different custom (and legal) "Mix tape" everytime you set foot out the door. The MP3 device itself provides the distinct DSP-based decryption (looking at the watermark in each song). This sounds totally cool to me. "Binding" the songs to a particular media makes this "Mix Tape" feature impossible. And the SDMI stresses repeatedly that it is to be "consumer" oriented.

I eagerly await the final SDMI spec to be published and end this confusion.

Ausdauer , thanks for the info, as you would expect I'll comment
a little later on this.
BTW, it isn't any of your business but you brought the subject up
as if it meant something, my holdings in IOM aren't even a small factor in my total holdings.
