Worldwide chip sales rose 12 percent in May

Worldwide sales of computer chips rose 12 percent in May from a year ago, led by surging sales in Asia and Japan, an industry trade group said Tuesday. Sales rose to $11.3 billion in May from $10.1 billion in May 1998, the Semiconductor Industry Association said. Sales climbed less than 1 percent from $11.2 billion in April 1999. Global sales of computer chips are expected to rise 12 percent this year, led by products used in phones and networks as well as the increasing popularity of the Internet. Recovering economies in Asia and Japan are helping buoy industry sales.

SAN JOSE -- The Asian chip markets are exploding in growth again and driving the industry's 1999 recovery, according to the latest sales figures released today by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). In May, chip sales in the Asia Pacific region jumped 17.9% to $2.77 billion compared to $2.35 billion in the same month last year, the SIA said.

The Asian market growth helped to push worldwide semiconductor sales up 11.8% to $11.28 billion in May compared to $10.09 billion a year ago, based on a three-month moving average in the SIA's global billings report. Compared to April's sales, semiconductor revenues in May were up just 0.8% (see table below).

In most regional markets, chip sales growth cooled down in May compared to the previous month. The SIA report said Europe's sales dropped 2.8% to $2.41 billion in May vs. $2.48 billion in April, while chip revenues in the Americas grew by only 0.6% to $3.64 billion vs. $3.62 billion in the previous month.

Chip sales in Japan, however, showed comparative strength, rising 0.9% to $2.46 billion in May vs. $2.43 billion in April--the second highest month-to-month gain next to the Asia Pacific region. Chip sales in the Asian Pacific region grew 4.3% in May compared to $2.66 billion in April, according to the global billings report.

"May's global sales numbers are a clear indication of the positive and solid growth of our industry" declared George Scalise, president of SIA. The SIA was encouraged by Japan's 15.3% increase in semiconductor revenues in May compared to $2.13 billion the same month a year ago.
