Fujitsu to expand advanced chips, slash DRAM business TOKYO, July 6 (Kyodo) -- Fujitsu Ltd. will boost its advanced semiconductor business, such as systems-on-a-chip and flash memories that are increasing in demand for home electronics and handy phones, while slashing conventional DRAM memory chip operation, company officials said Tuesday. Profit margins on DRAMs, or dynamic random access memories, have been decreasing, the officials said. Fujitsu projects revenue from systems-on-a-chip to reach 220 billion yen in fiscal 2002, double its fiscal 1999 revenue estimate, according to the officials. The Tokyo-based company is planning to start delivery of two varieties of its FR-V microprocessor late this year as its key system-on-a-chip -- chip that contains highly integrated devices. The FR-V, which Fujitsu boasts has achieved the world's best performance with low power consumption, is fit for video and digital computer processing and intended for car navigation and digital home electronics goods, they said. Fujitsu is also enjoying strong demand for flash memories primarily from mobile phone builders. Demand has been running at double the company's production capacity, they said. Excess capacity for DRAM production will now be used for production of systems-on-a-chip and flash memories, and the company is also considering making additional investments for semiconductor production facilities, they said.
