These new chips, due to ship later this year from Agere, Alliance Semiconductor, C-Port, Maker Communications, SiTera, Softcom Microsystems, T.Sqware and others, provide an off-the-shelf alternative to network equipment makers currently using high-speed chips that require months, or even years, to develop and that have limited ability to perform new tasks.

Network processor makers are expected to emerge as suppliers to competitive network equipment companies, similar to the way in which rival PC manufacturers purchase microprocessors from Intel and a few other players, said John Freeman, an analyst at research firm Current Analysis.
