***THINPHONE ARRIVES IN BAY AREA***

A friend of mine now uses his QCP 860 THINPHONE on GTE's 800mhz cellular
system. Here's how he did it:

He purchased the THINPHONE from Airtouch in Stockton for $299. Although some
of the sales people refused to sell him a phone without Airtouch service, he
said if you keep asking different sales reps, about 1 out of 2 sales people
will sell the phone without service. He said the Airtouch 800 number was
willing to sell him the THINPHONE over the phone via credit card, without
service for $349. He said that he was also quoted $399 from a different
operator during a different call; his advice was to call 3 or 4 times, and
call around to the different Airtouch stores to find the best price, since
each of them was different.

Once he had the THINPHONE in hand, he went to his local GTE store and asked
them to switch his service from his Sony CM-1300 to his THINPHONE; they did
it for free, no questions asked. He also was told by GTE that if he did not
have current GTE service, they would have given him a $50 credit for signing
up for GTE service, and supplying his own phone; in other words the THINPHONE
is an option for current or new GTE customers.

As for the THINPHONE, he loves it. It's dual mode, and works much better than
his Sony (which by the way was a Qualcomm phone in Sony clothing). Now
there's no excuse not to have the THINPHONE in the Bay Area.
