New drives coming this fall...............................techweb.com July 05, 1999, Issue: 849 Section: Sourcing -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Drives Expected To Ship This Fall -- Vendors unveil DVD plans Joseph F. Kovar New York - Storage vendors took time out during PC Expo, held here last month, to show their latest DVD drives. Several vendors, including Hewlett-Packard Co., Palo Alto, Calif., Verbatim Corp., Charlotte, N.C., Philips Electronics, New York, and Sony Corp., Park Ridge, N.J., discussed their plans to release DVD+RW drives and media. Executives at HP, Sony, and Philips said the companies already are making limited numbers of drives available to strategic partners, with actual deliveries expected to begin this fall. Verbatim plans to start shipping DVD+RW media this fall, as well, company executives said. HP started shipping a few drives to key partners in June, said Kevin Saldanha, the vendor's DVD+RW product manager. He said the company expects to begin commercial shipment this fall via the same channels as its CD-RW drives. While HP does not make its own DVD-ROM drives, samples of the company's DVD+RW drives already are in the hands of other DVD-ROM manufacturers, Saldanha said. "Currently, there are no DVD-ROM drives that read DVD+RW recorded media," he said. "We would like that to happen." DVD+RW, with its 2.6-Gbyte media, is only one of a number of competing writable DVD formats, said Ray Freeman, president of Santa Barbara, Calif.-based analyst firm Freeman Associates and facilitator of the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA).
