how about if Sun shops buy n-way intel box to run Solaris x86?

James, respectfully, you just don't seem to get it IMO and by simply keeping your focus on the desktop and small server-dom, you have clouded your view of the entire industry and SUNW in particular.

SUNW is not a perfect company and they won't provide everything for everyone. That has never been the goal as far as I can tell. What they do offer are solid products for respectable prices. This creates excellent cash flow, stable earnings for their shareholders and allows for substantial R+D spending. SUNW continues to show excellent growth for a company their size and they do so against some of the toughest competition in the world.

Continually comparing SUNW products to those offered by MSFT is the only thing you seem to focus on. You have lost your objectivity on SUNW or, more likely, you never had any objectivity on SUNW. You talk about tech gaps like you are an expert but your banter here on this thread shows you don't know as much as you think you do. I make this last comment not to upset you but, respectfully, I don't think you know as much as you think you do (EDIT) about SUNW as an investment (end of EDIT).

If you haven't done so already, maybe you should invest a few dollars in SUNW and enjoy the returns so many of us reap. Since you've started your MSFT fillabuster on this thread, I just don't see how you've shed light on any of SUNW's weaknesses except for the one that everyone here knew existed before your arrival, that of the "desktop" GUI.

You may take this post as ranting, I just think of it as another attempt to get you to be objective. You are starting to remind me of someone who watches an incredible feat and then turns around and says to his neighbor, "I've seen better" instead of giving credit for the feat you just witnessed.

BTW, SUNW's strategy is to make better hardware/software/system solutions and they don't need the DOJ to execute. They need the DOJ to do what the DOJ is designed to do, nothing more, nothing less.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
Michael

You said:

"Okay, how about if Sun shops buy n-way intel box to run Solaris x86? A lot of Sun shops could be thinking of that scenario for future purchases I'm sure. It gives them the flexibility of running NT/Linux/QNX/SCO... or others in the future."

... and you've said similar things in the past, so presumably you mean it. I just don't see it that way, James. Serious shops don't OS-jump on existing hardware; they buy hardware and software that go together and accomplish a need, and then they expect them to work together until they're obsolete. Why would somebody base a hardware decision on an ability to switch from Solaris to other variants of Unix sometime in the future? If that's what they intend to do, why not start out with, e.g., SCO? In other words, I think the "flexibility" you seem to value is worthless except in the domain of hobbyists.

JMHO.
