The right to bear arms is the right to protect oneself or one's family from either individuals or governments that attempt to deny basic rights/freedoms, not the right to go hunting. Of course, one of the government's main responsibilities (governments do have a role)in a free society as outlined by our founding fathers is to protect the freedoms of individuals when such freedoms are violated by other individuals or foreign states. But when it is impossible for the government to be there when the criminal is about to harm others, then the most powerful handgun in the world will do the job. Or if you prefer, a hand grenade. Either will do the job sufficiently.

You are missing the whole point. Criminals don't give a tinker's damn about what has lawful existence. That's why they are also called outlaws. You can make all the laws you want making guns illegal, and the outlaws will still get them, they even know how to make their own. If you really want to do something constructive, fight to change the court system and make sure that anyone who uses any kind of gun in an unlawful way, gets the book thrown at him and lands his butt in the slammer for a long, long time.
