When I say "semi-automatic" weapon, what I mean are the firearms that can fire rounds of ammunition without reloading. I am not sure if that is the accurate description of a semi-automatic or not. The relevance here is that one guy can go to a schoolyard and blow away 15 kids in about a minute with one of these things, whereas if he had a pistol he would have to reload, aim and shoot and there would at least be a chance someone could get away. Additionally, semi-automatic weapons remove the "sporting" aspect of target shooting, so there is no point to them except to kill. Same issue with the police. Semi-automatic weapons enable a few people to go head to head with the police whereas with a pistol they would still be dangerous to individuals but not really to the police. Please don't pull up the tired old "criminals will get these anyway" excuse since many of these crazies had no criminal record until they blew up the local schoolyard. The mere existance of this weapon enabled the crime.
