FOCUS Enhancements Announces the Development of the 'i-net TV' chip that is designed for the Intel 810 chip set with Intel 3-D graphics
Business Wire - July 06, 1999 09:55
WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1999--FOCUS Enhancements, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCSE) announced today that the Company is in development of the "i-net TV" interface chip for Internet Set Top Boxes and low cost personal computers. The "i-net TV" chip is being designed to work with the recently announced Intel(R) (NASDAQ:INTC) 810 chip set with Intel(R) 3-D graphics, which is intended for high performance, low-cost applications such as low-cost personal computers and Internet Set Top Boxes.

The "i-net TV" chip will bring a number of innovations to low-cost, high-quality TV interfaces. The chip uses patented variable scaling to exactly fit the PC image or Internet image to any TV screen. The "i-net TV" chip will also have built-in interfaces to allow standard TV broadcasts or a DVD movie to be inexpensively, digitally switched through the chip for very high video quality. This will allow Internet Set Top Box makers to include TV tuners or DVDs in their products, with easy customer hookup and high video quality. The "i-net TV" has the same innovative 2-D flicker filter that is in previously announced FOCUS Enhancements video conversion chips. The patent-pending flicker filter enhances text readability while eliminating flicker from the image. The "i-net TV" will be the first single chip solution providing all these features in one low-cost chip. The "i-net TV" chip is anticipated to sell under $5 per chip in quantities greater than 500,000 per year.

The "i-net TV' is the newest in a line of TV interface ICs from FOCUS Enhancements. The line includes the previously announced FS401 which is optimized for television manufacturers, the FS402 (with Macrovision 7) aimed at high-end PC motherboard and graphic card applications, and the FS403 aimed at stand-alone video scan converter Set Top Boxes. The Company plans to have the new "i-net TV" chip to have a version that will include Macrovision 7, and the Company plans to be broad sampling in late Q3 1999. Limited samples of the "i-net TV" chip are available now.

FOCUS Enhancements' digital video convergence technology forms the most flexible PC-to-TV video convergence chips in the market since it works with TVs, PCs, or Set Top Boxes to display computer images without any additional software drivers, or external circuitry. It is the only such ASIC technology available that does not require software to be VGA chip independent, making integration of FOCUS' technology easier and more cost-effective than other competitive products. The technology is truly plug-and-play since it can accommodate any refresh rate up to 160Hz, as opposed to recently introduced PC-to-TV solutions from competitors that accommodate up to 60Hz refresh rates. The FOCUS Enhancements digital video co-processor family is the only PC-to-TV encoder that supports resolutions of 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and 1600x1200 with patented variable scaling. The FOCUS single solution convergence chip also provides underscaling, compression, and visibility at levels exceeding all competitive products. FOCUS Enhancements has multiple patents and multiples patents pending on their video convergence processes.

FOCUS Enhancements, Inc. is an industry leader in the development and marketing of advanced, proprietary video scan conversion products for the rapidly converging, multi-billion dollar computer and television industries. The Company's products, which are sold globally through Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and resellers, merge computer-generated graphics and television displays for presentations, training, education, video teleconferencing, Internet viewing, and home gaming markets. In addition, the Company is developing a family of products that will enable the current installed base of televisions, VCRs, and camcorders to remain functional in upcoming HDTV environments.

Forward looking statements in this release are made pursuant to the "safe harbor" provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Investors are cautioned that such forward looking statements involve risks and uncertainties, including, without limitation, continued acceptance of the Company's products, increased levels of competition for the Company, new products and technological changes, the Company's dependence upon third-party suppliers, intellectual property rights and other risks detailed from time to time in the Company's periodic reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
