TMann, your observations probably don't signify much change of heart in Vodafone.

1. Vodafone took advantage last year of the offer Loral made in Spring '98 to monetize some of its capital gains in G* (some of which had to be escrowed for expenditures on GWs and handsets) I'm not aware of any recent new decisions to unload interests in GLP, though when Vod released its recent annual earnings statement, the cap gain got mentioned and some people took it to mean a recent sale.

2. I never heard of a plan for Vod to have a European GW, and it would be pretty wasteful to build one (at least early) considering the GWs in Italy, Finland and France, which pretty much blanket Vod's territories. I consider the indication that TESAM or Elsacom will provide service in those regions as good news and assume Vod will get royalties or some consideration for letting the other partners service "Vod" territories.

3. The Vod S. Africa GW is on line and is one of the first nine GWs to roll out.

4. Vod announced recently plans to service Australia continent-wide. That can't be done with only one GW (the one at Dubbo which is already up). I think it's plausible that Vod will wait until it's continent wide in Australia (early 2000, I hope) to launch service in Oz.
