Solaris Software Reduces Costs, Allows Server Consolidation, Eases Management
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 7, 1999--
Solaris Resource Manager 1.1 and Sun Cluster 2.2 Software
Optimize System Efficiency and Availability
For businesses whose success relies on the availability of their applications and services, Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced Solaris Resource Manager 1.1 software. The new software, which is now certified by Sun to run with Sun(tm) Cluster 2.2 software, is designed to help IT managers gain greater control over enterprise systems.
The combination of Sun Cluster and Solaris Resource Manager software enables IT managers to easily and reliably allocate and control major system resources and consolidate applications on a highly available Sun cluster. In the event of an unlikely system failure, they allow the availability of service to end-users by restarting applications and maintaining access to the required levels of system resources.
"Today, uptime is critical to survival. The combination of Solaris Resource Manager 1.1 and Sun Cluster 2.2 software helps our customers more efficiently manage their system resources so that mission-critical information is always available to end-users," said Rich Green, vice president, Solaris Software, Sun Microsystems. "We are enabling IT managers to deploy and service multiple applications from a highly available Sun cluster, which greatly reduces the total cost of administration without sacrificing the mainframe-class reliability, availability and serviceability they need."
Solaris Resource Manager
For enterprise customers, Solaris Resource Manager allows multiple applications to be efficiently hosted on a single system or a Sun cluster. This is easier and more cost-effective than allocating one application per system. This means that multiple ERP modules and database instances can be hosted on the same system or cluster that also acts as a file and Web server. System resources are allocated based on application needs and desired performance.
In addition, Solaris Resource Manager enables service providers to reliably host hundreds of Web servers on a single machine or cluster, allowing each of their customers to receive the specific resources they have purchased. By integrating Sun Cluster Technology, Solaris Resource Manager can allow applications that have failed over to maintain the expected level of service.
Solaris Resource Manager 1.1 gives IT managers the ability to allocate and control major system resources such as central processing units (CPU), virtual memory, and number of processes: -0- *T
-- providing resources to key applications
-- making the performance of applications and system response times
more predictable, and
-- reducing the likelihood of resource starvation. *T
