Denver, July 7 (Bloomberg) -- U S West Inc. is expected to announce that it will sell a low-cost version of a high-speed Internet service that uses traditional phone lines to boost online connection speeds by about five times the fastest traditional modems, the Wall Street Journal said. The service will be aimed at ''recreational users who don't need to be connected all the time,'' U S West Vice President Mike Rouleau said, and the digital-subscriber line, or DSL, service will cost about $20 a month, $10 less than DSL service that's always connected to the Internet. U S West said it expects to introduce the low-cost service, under which users must dial their online service each time they link to the Web, in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, today, and it will be available in 40 cities within six months, the Journal reported. Global Crossing Ltd. and Qwest Communications International Inc. are battling to buy U S West. (WSJ 7/1 C20 wsj.com) Jul/07/1999 6:56 For more stories from Bloomberg News, click here.
