...perhaps Q intends to sell handset division [...] build up
the war chest with cold cash, then buy a handheld PC mfr of
solid repute...integrate the wireless modem, and liftoff

(feeling a bit as though I am crashing a private party tonight)

How about:
- Q sells handset to Siemens for a boatload of eurobucks
- Q buys Palm division from (struggling) COMS
(rumoured to be up for sale to the right bidder)
- Q stock goes to $305 by the turn of the millenium

(Okay, I'll settle for just #3.)

IMHO (unlettered) opinion, I'd assume a JV is much more likely than an outright sale. But I bow to the collective wisdom of the SI elders on this one.

humbly,

Siemens sale--I must be dense. Reasons why this rumor might make sense have been explained to me many times by many people and I still don't get it. A joint venture perhaps, to stimulate effective penetration in Europe--but a sale. Such action appears to ignore huge current momentum of Q. Perhaps a JV, or joint marketing arrangementleading to a possible sale in a few years if both parties agree, or a separate Siemens phone manufacturing operation if they don't. I think It is healthy for Q to set up forces that sap the strength from NOK and ERICY. We just don't need the Finnish government medeling in China policy so they can sell phones. And God only knows what medeling the Sweeds have been doing over there--bit players trying to seize a major role in international power politics. Stopping all of this, it seems to me, could be accomplished without a sale.
I doubt that Justice would go along, given the pathetic state of potential competitor MOT in the US. Of course, money talks with our current President.
