Cable & Wireless Acquires Leading UK ISP July 6, 1999
By John Lewell
England Correspondent International News Archives
[London] Cable & Wireless has announced that it has acquired Internet Network Services (INS), the largest independent ISP in the UK.

With the purchase comes the entire group of INS companies, including education-specific ISP Edex.

"By acquiring INS, Cable & Wireless has taken another important step towards its goal of providing IP services backed up by the Cable & Wireless global communications network," said Lance Spencer, managing director of IP and customer solutions.

"As traditional voice and data applications are increasingly substituted by IP-based solutions, the acquisition of INS increases Cable & Wireless' capabilities and significantly enhances the range and quality of services and support we can offer our corporate and business customers."

As recently as May, INS was rated by the Durlacher Quarterly Internet Report as being the fastest growing corporate ISP in the UK. It provides a one-stop service of filtered Internet connectivity, Web hosting, managed co-location services, VPNs, extranets and intranets.

Lance Spencer said the deal would add shareholder value and benefits to Cable & Wireless customers.

Jeff, GREAT X-STREAM INFORMATION.!!-Let's hope X-Stream can keep building their subscribers list the way they are going, and end up in the top five (5) in the U.K.. We know the names of the top guns in the USA when the Internet started there, and how their share values jumped 2000 and 3000% ++.!!! I think those in the U.K. will back the "Home Town Boy's" over American Companies like AOL, look's like AOL slipped from #1 position in the U.K and is now in 4th. place.???? X-Stream is only starting to put out press releases in the last few day's. Is that why their volume shot up 300% yesterday, or is something big coming down??? What about that US$1.5 million they have for advertising, this is the time to spend that ahead of FreeServes IPO.?? I wonder when FreeServe will put out that IPO, (July 12th.???) that should be a huge day for X-Stream, where they hold 1/3 FreeServe's share numbers.!!!!
