I recently saw a chart depicting the ratio of
margin debt to disposable personal income done
by The Bank Credit Analyst. Absolute historical
highs are also confirmed by that source.

I tried to replicate the info but an historical
series available on the Web seems hard to find.
Most analysts use monthly data collected by the NYSE on
margin debt issued by NYSE members, however it is not
in chart ready form in my experience. The Fed has a
monthly banking statistic,"Security", in the H8 Release on bank
credit which "consists of reverse RPs with brokers and dealers and loans to purchase and carry securities" and "excludes federal funds sold to, reverse RPs with, and loans made to commercial banks".
"Security" can be found under "Loans and Leases in Bank Credit"
as part of the Assets of US Commercial Banks. This statistic may
include, however, working capital loans to Brokers and thus could
be biased somewhat in capturing just Margin Debt activity.

If anyone finds a good, easily transferable, series on Margin Debt
in the US I would appreciate being posted as to its whereabouts.

Here's the NYSE margin debt levels up to May...I'll have to break out the big guns later and see if I can't get something more up to date.
