Echoing Edelstone's sentiments was Merrill Lynch analyst Joe Osha who also expects the June quarter to be "upbeat" for chip makers. Osha believes demand for communications equipment is driving the semiconductor industry.
Shares of Intel (INTC) still basked in the glow of previous upgrades, as its shares moved forward 1/2 to 64 3/8.
Despite the encouraging remarks, shares of many chip-related players closed lower. Applied Materials (AMAT) shares fell 4 to 70 1/2; Novellus (NVLS) stock lost 2 7/16 to 69 3/16; and KLA-Tencor (KLA) dropped 3 13/16 to 64 1/2.
