Lycos, RCN In High-Speed Internet Content Pact
PRINCETON, N.J. (Reuters) - Telecommunications company RCN Corp. (Nasdaq:RCNC - news) and Web network Lycos Inc. (Nasdaq:LCOS - news) said Wednesday they formed an exclusive alliance to develop content to be deployed over a high-speed fiber optic network being built by RCN.

The partnership is part of Lycos' broadband push, which it calls ''Lycos Lightning,'' to develop, test and deploy services made possible by high-speed Internet connections, such as multimedia and entertainment services.

The agreement will also make a co-branded version of ''My Lycos'' personal portal start page, which provides personalized news, stock quotes and other functions, available to more than 500,000 RCN dial-up subscribers in a region that includes Boston and Washington.

''We use dial-up Internet access as a way to build a satisfied customer base in advance of our network construction,'' RCN Chief Executive David McCourt said in a prepared statement. ''As our network is completed, our dial-up customers will have the opportunity to migrate to our high-speed fiber optic network.''

''In the meantime, by providing superior content from Lycos, we believe that RCN customers who access the Internet over conventional modems can have a great Internet experience,'' he said.
