Economists Expect Strong Growth For 1999 But Are Mixed On 2000

dowjones.wsj.com

>>"The U.S. economy is doing very well and is just roaring along."

Such sentiments are a far cry from six months ago when many economists
believed, mistakenly, that international financial turmoil and weak stock prices
would cause the U.S. economy to slow during most of 1999. Others believed
the economy would be weighed down by a profit squeeze and a slowdown in
capital spending. But again, economists underestimated consumers' spending
power and overestimated the impact that global financial problems can have on
an economy as large and dynamic as that of the U.S.

It appears that economists have decided it's time to stop betting against the
economy.<<
