UK resumes full diplomatic relations with Libya, london, july 7, irna -- britain announced wednesday an immediate resumption of full diplomatic relations with libya for the first time in 15 years after agreeing on a joint statement on the killing of a policewoman in 1984. foreign secretary robin cook told parliament that the restoration followed britain and libya agreeing to issue a joint statement after discussions on a range of mutual concerns. in the statement, libya 'accepted general responsibility' for the actions of those inside the libyan people's bureau in london at the time british policewoman yvonne fletcher was killed by a bullet outside the embassy building. it offered to make an 'appropriate payment' in compensation, without admitting any responsibility for the shooting, but said it took note that an inquest found fletcher was killed by a bullet fired from the embassy. cook told mps that the way was now open for the police to investigate the killing of the policewoman as fast as it can and expected libya to cooperate at all stages. the agreement, together with the handover of lockerbie bombing suspects for trial in the hague, opens the way for britain to resume relations, he said, adding that an ambassador to tripoli would be appointed 'as quickly as practical'. in the joint statement, libya condemned international terrorism and pledged to fight against it, while the uk was also understood to 'take action in accordance with the law' on allegations of terrorist-related activity within the uk. both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and expressed deep sympathy with the families of terrorist victims in libya as well as the uk.
