<Tenchusatsu: Do you have any insights into the VIA/National dealings?>

Not much other than speculation. VIA not only gets Cyrix (either in an agreement or an outright purchase; I forgot which one it is), but they also get National to become a chipset foundary for them, allowing them to move to a 133 MHz FSB, and with it, PC133 SDRAM technology.

VIA is quickly headed toward integration, which is necessary in reducing the cost of building a PC, thereby allowing prices to fall. With Cyrix, and with the chipset agreement, it seems VIA is going to take on Intel's Celeron/Whitney combo in the near term. Later, VIA will also be going up against Intel's Timna (PC on a chip).

How well VIA does in the market is up in the air. They're bragging that their overhead is much lower than Intel's, and that they can sell at prices that Intel won't touch even with Celeron. Yeah, I've heard that before; AMD and Cyrix once said this, and look how well they're doing financially. But who knows? Maybe VIA will get it right where others failed.
