The only thing I saw on AMAT today in the NYT was in the "Hot & Cold" section on page C7 (stocks with large % gains / losses). The short write-up, regarding the 3.29% increase yesterday, said:

"Rises on optimism the maker of semiconductor equipment will exceed profit expectations when it reports its fiscal third-quarter earnings. Analysts had expected the company to earn 53 cents a share."

So there you have it...a complete explanation -- no other factors had anything to do with the rise. Which, of course, means that the expectations must have come quickly down today [sarcasm intended].
