pomp,

Remember too that Intel has invested at least $600M in DRAM companies to ensure RDRAM production and that they hold warrants for 1M shares of RMBS at $10 per share (which might be chump change to them, but nothing they'll give up lightly) plus the DRAM companies hold warrants on up to another 400K shares. Intel will not give up RDRAM quickly. And in the end, Intel will decide the direction of the memory market, not anyone else (just check the VESA/EISA/PCI battle results of a few years ago for confirmation, as well as the PC-100 SDRAM spec, as well as etc., etc. etc.).

Dave

>>Remember guys and gals, at this point it is not important whether Rambus performance is better than PC 133. It is only important that Intel believes that Rambus is the correct solution to its long term needs. I don't believe for a minute that tests showing RDRAM with camino to be no better than SDRAM 133 will move the stock if Intel is still behind the Rambus technology. Rambus will be "what's inside" and it will sell and it will generate royalties. <<

pomp,
very well said.
remember also, the new sony playstation and dell workstations and pc's all with rambus are going to hit the market all at the same time,
in about 60 days.
also look for sony and panasonic hdtv's and other matsushita products with rambus inside to be announced very very soon.
the thread continues to focus on pc's...remember rambus only expects to get 1/3 of their revenues from pc's. this company is a grand slam homerun with or without pc's. but as you said they get pc's too. next year rambus will own the laptop market as well.
unclewest

jim wolf had a great post a few days ago.

Now thats a truly amazing statement to me.

If RDRAM offers no end-user performance improvement over PC 133 it is as dead as the DODO bird.

Realistically it needs to offer a 10% improvement to justify the price's being proposed. Otherwise consumers will simply buy the next faster CPU grade.

Remember initially 256Mb of RDRAM will sell for >>$300 to oems in volume for the next year or so.

That will translate to a $300-400 end user delta in pricing.

So the idea that end users will blindly pay a $500 delta simply does not hold up to reality or any kind of common sense.

Regards,

Kash Johal.
